On October 22nd, Valparaiso's cultural community notched another milestone as the Valparaiso Foundation and Maria Cecilia Toledo offered a stunning gala featuring highlights from the two previous versions of Opera by the Sea. The gala was sponsored by Cencosud, owner of Jumbo Supermarkets, Easy Homecenters, and the department store chain, Almacenes Paris. Don Horst Paulmann, founder of Cencosud, was in attendance for the gala and could barely contain his enthusiasm. According to Don Horst, Cencosud's interest in the Duetsches Haus is natural, given the company's architectural efforts to preserve the city's heritage in the development of the new Portal Valparaiso Shopping Center. For the new shopping center, Cencosud purchased the old Lippigas facility on Argentina Avenue, investing significant resources to restore the buildings 19th-century facade and clean up the environmental issues involved in recycling an area previous destined for industrial use. Cencosud will dedicate the restored facade in February and has solicited the aid of the Valparaiso Foundation to organize the event.
